Unit 1: Up and About

Chapter 1

1) What is Johnny's position in the Lapham household?

Johnny's job is he is the boss of the attic and most of the house. Johnny is also in charge of Dove and Dusty.

2) How do Dove and Johnny feel about each other?

Dove hates Johnny because he bullies him. Dove also admired Johnny as much as he hated him.

Chapter 3

1) How serious is Johnny about his work and what are his plans for the future?


Johnny is very serious about his work because he won't take breaks and stop for non-important stuff. He hopes to become a professional silversmith.

Chapter 4

1) Johnny works while Mrs. Lapham sleeps and Dove and Dusty go swimming. What does this show about Johnny and his feelings towards his work?

Johnny is really determined to finish his project and thinks he can do a good job if he keeps at it and works hard.

Chapter 6

1) What does the crest of the Lytes look like? What feelings does it convey?

The crest is an eye rising up from the sea. It conveys happiness, excitement, and power because it represents the Lytes.

Unit 2: The Pride of Your Power

1) Why does Johnny turn down Paul Revere's offer?

Johnny knew if he left the Laphams nothing would ever get done and they would starve.

Chapter 3

1) What are the small important events leading to Johnny's accident?

Johnny was ready to dip the basin in silver so he heated the silver up while he got a tool. Mrs. Lapham told him it was ready to pour, then Johnny slipped and burned his hand on the hot silver.

Chapter 5

1) How does Johnny's life change as a result of the accident and why? Johnny's life changed when he could no longer work in the shop with a maimed hand. He had to do chores, which he considered "doing nothing". Mr. Lapham told Johnny that he couldn't stay with them anymore because he was unable to work. He also told Johnny that Dove harmed him on purpose and that Johnny was to forgive Dove like a Christian, but Johnny didn't.

Unit 3: An Earth of Brass

Chapter 1

1) How does Rab react to Johnny's maimed hand and what does Johnny think of Rab?

Rab doesn't mind Johnny's maimed hand which makes Johnny think he is a kind and understanding man.

Chapter 3

1) How does the section title, "Earth of Brass", relate to Johnny's life, especially his professional life as a silversmith?

Johnny is a silversmith that works with different materials to make stuff. He probably makes a lot of stuff with brass and silver.

Unit 4: The Rising Eye

Chapter 1

1) What is Merchant Lyte like?

Merchant Lyte tries to be funny when things are serious. He also is very rich and is related to Johnny.

Chapter 2

1) The political parties, Whig and Tory hold conflicting views. Tell about each party and their views on the Stamp Act.

The Whigs declare that taxation without representation is tyranny. The Tories believe all differences could be settled with time, patience, and respect for government.

Chapter 5

2) Why does the court decision favor Johnny?

The court decision favors Johnny because he said his mother gave him the cup and she told him never to show anyone.

Unit 5: The Boston Observer

Chapter 2

1) What are Johnny's responsibility as a messenger? Why is he an important link in the Whigs communication system?

Johnny's responsibility as a messenger is to deliver papers to people. Johnny is also an important link in the Whig's communication system because people often asked him questions about politics, and since he delivers papers, he could talk to Whigs about questions or things people have talked to him about.

Chapter 3 & 4

1) How does Johnny feel about the great differences in his life since he left the Laphams?

Johnny is really glad he left the Laphams because he has a job he likes and he is staying with people to stay with that he enjoys.

2) Think about this statement: "If pushed a little farther, he might have taken to crime- because that was what was expected of him." Why do people tend to live up to the exceptions of others?

People live up to the exceptions of others because they think if they copy the other person, they would be cool. People might also copy them because they want to be like them.

3) What suggestions does Rab give Johnny to improve his relationships with people?

One suggestion is that Rab tells him to count to ten before speaking so he doesn't get angry at anybody and make them want to tell on Johnny.

4) Why is the Observers' Club a treasonous organization?

The Observers' Club plans attacks on England.

Unit 6: Salt-Water Tea

Chapter 5

1) What skill must Johnny develop to play a part in the Tea Party?

Johnny must learn how to chop things with a maimed hand because he will be chopping boxes.

Unit 7: The Fiddler's Bill

Chapter 1

1) What punishment does England impose on the colonies for the Boston Tea Party?

No ships were allowed to leave or enter the Boston Harbor and some of their food comes on ships.

2) How does this punishment unite the colonies?

The colonies will have to work together so the people won't starve.

Chapter 2

1) Gallows are not constructed to punish rebels and the presses are not prohibited from printing treasonous statements. Why?

Gallows were not constructed, because General Gage isn't a tyrant.

Chapter 3

2) Johnny protects Dove when the English boys tease him. Why has Johnny changed?

The English boys who teased Dove made him swear to the King of England and Johnny knew that was wrong. Johnny also protected Dove because he saw that Dove trusted him because Johnny was always by Dove's side.

Chapter 4

1) How have Johnny's feelings changed towards Mrs. Lapham and why?

Johnny's feelings have changed towards Mrs. Lapham because after he left he was worried about all the work she would have to do to keep the household together.

Chapter 5

1) Who is Sam Adams' spy in the Lyte household?

Mrs. Bessie is Sam Adams' spy in the Lyte household.

Unit 8: A World to Come

Chapter 1

1) Why is the mob pursuing the Lytes?

Mr. Lyte is a Tory and he thinks he is very special because he is a merchant.

Chapter 2

1) What information does the Bible reveal about Johnny's ancestry?

The Bible says that Johnny's parents died before he was born but another account says that Johnny was born in France and that his father died before he was born.

Johnny also discovers that he is Merchant Lyte's grandnephew.

2) Johnny says, "This is the end. The end of one thing- the beginning of something else." To what events does Johnny's statement refer?

Johnny says this because he knows that there is going to be a civil war.

Chapter 5

1) James Otis wants to fight for freedom for "men and women and children all over the world." What freedom does he propose to procure for people?

James Otis wants people to have the freedom of speech and the freedom to do what ever they want.

Unit 9: The Scarlet Deluge

Chapter 3

1) How has Johnny changed from the beginning of the novel to this chapter?

Johnny has changed because he helped Mr. Pumpkin escape because Pumpkin didn't like living under Britain's control and he knew there was going to be a war.

2) How are the Minute Men preparing for war?

The Minute Men got guns and are making their own bullets and powder from materials because a lot of people are also preparing for the war.

Chapter 5

1) As Johnny looks into "the face of death", what does he feel?

As Johnny witnesses Mr. Pumpkin's death, he feels sorry for him. Johnny knows Pumpkin wanted to be free and live the life he wanted. But as Johnny thinks about this, he felt that he was a coward, and the sight of the death badly unnerved Johnny.

Unit 10: "Disperse, Ye Rebels"

Chapter 1

1) What occurrences lead the patriots to believe the British are beginning to move against the rebels?

The British were readying their land boats and they might come to Charlestown to fight them. 2) What is the signal of Charlestown that the patriots plan to use if the British move? Why will warning help the patriots?

They will hold up one lantern if the British come by the Neck, and two lanterns of the British are coming by boat.

Chapter 2

1) Why does Rab decide to leave Boston? How does Johnny react to this decision?

Rab decides to leave Boston because he wants to fight in the Battle of Lexington. Johnny is very upset that Rab is leaving because he is afraid he might get killed. Johnny reacts by saying he wants to go, but Rab says it's too dangerous and that he should say with Dove, even thought Johnny can't stand Dove.

Unit 11: Yankee Doodle

Chapter 1

1) Where does the first battle occur, and why are the Minute Men defeated?

The first battle occurred at Lexington and the Minute Men were defeated because the British were having a target practice and the men stood up and got shot.

Chapter 3

1) Why are the British unable to punish the opposition leaders?

All of the opposition leader left to go help the patriots at the battle.

Chapter 4

1) What detail about Johnny convinced Lavinia to find out about Johnny's past?

Johnny's mother's last name was Lyte and his father's last name was Latour , not Tremain.

Chapter 5

1) In Johnny's discussion with Mrs. Bessie, he calls himself "A boy in time of peace and a man in time of war." What does this mean?

Johnny means he still acts like a boy while working and doing other things, but when the battles are going on he acts like a man so he can help out.

Unit 12: A Man Can Stand Up

Chapter 1

1) What does Johnny do to his appearance to make him fit in with the way the British soldiers look?

He wore Mr. Pumpkin's outfit then he rolled it in dirt and smeared blood on his face to make it look like he got wounded.

Chapter 2

1) Why is Johnny amazed that the rebels have defeated the British?

Johnny is amazed because he knows that the British are stronger, have more weapons, and are far more experienced than the rebels.

Chapter 3

1) What are Johnny's thoughts as he stands on Lexington Green? What is his emotional response?

Johnny thinks of the people who fought and died there were brave and hopeless. His nose was prickling because he was trying not to cry.

Chapter 5

1) Why does Rab die? What is Johnny's reaction to his death?

Rab dies because he was badly wounded when the British soldiers shot him. Johnny was disappointed because Rab told him to go away so Johnny didn't have to see him die, but what Johnny really wanted was to stay with Rab.

2) Why doesn't Johnny feel ashamed of his hand anymore?

Johnny doesn't feel ashamed of his hand anymore because he has pride in his country.

3) How has Johnny changed in thoughts, actions, and feelings from the beginning to the end of the book?

At the beginning of the book, Johnny only cared about himself and didn't think of others, but towards the end of the book, when the battle was approaching, he thought of others and how he could help them.
